Alan Shearer criticizes Manchester United star after win over Nottingham Forest: “Same old, same old”

According to Mirror.co, Alan Shearer blasted Manchester United flop Antony for “not doing enough” against Nottingham Forest. The Brazilian winger started the Red Devils’ fifth-round FA Cup triumph, his first start in a month. While he had some skill and struck the crossbar, he only lasted 72 minutes before being replaced by Erik ten Hag.

After seeing the game, Shearer was not convinced and believed Antony should have contributed significantly more. He said: “He may be sad that he is leaving, but he hasn’t done nearly enough to merit staying on the field tonight.

“Same old, same old—get the ball, come inside, give it to someone else, or take a shot. It’s not enough when you’re so expensive.”

Antony, an £86 million transfer from Ajax, has had a rough second season at Old Trafford. In 27 games across all competitions, he has only scored once and contributed one assist, both of which came in his last FA Cup match against Newport. Prior to the match against Forest, Ten Hag sent a stern message to his underperforming winger, demanding better. He stated, “He has just improved his form, and we know he did not play well in the autumn.

“But he needs to battle back, show some resilience, and be motivated to establish that he is a Manchester United player and capable of doing so. We’ve seen flashes of it, and he needs to do it regularly.” Antony’s future at Manchester United may be jeopardised if he does not improve his performance. According to reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to replace the Old Trafford playing staff this summer.

Up to ten first-team players, including Antony, might be released. The Red Devils are supposedly open to proposals for him, but they are aware that they may not be able to recoup even half of the £86 million they paid on him. Antony’s current deal at Old Trafford runs until the summer of 2027. In all, the 15-time Brazil international has made 71 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring nine times.

He will be hoping for another opportunity in Manchester United’s next Premier League match, which is against rivals Manchester City this weekend at the Etihad Stadium. The winger scored in the same game last season as Ten Hag’s team suffered a humiliating 6-3 loss.
