Manchester United gains ground in the pursuit of Casemiro’s “replacement,” and additional transfer rumours surface.

According to the report from manchestereveningnews, it’s indeed a piece of good news that the Red Devil’s have been handed a boost in their proposed bid to sign Amadou Onana. This happened as the club continue to scour the market for a possible Casemiro replacement. United snapped-up the Brazilian coming up two years ago from Spanish giants Real Madrid for £60million plus add-ons.

It came after the club failed in their chase for Frenkie de Jong as he opted to stay put at Barcelona instead. United have brought in five central midfielders – including Christian Eriksen on a free transfer and two loans – since Erik ten Hag left Ajax to touch down in the Premier League as their manager two summers ago.

Reports from The Sun pinpoint continued interest from United in Onana, meanwhile, as they plot further additions in that area. Arsenal and Chelsea are also thought to be keen, but fellow suitors Barcelona might be unable to offer Everton what they want for him owing to financial concerns.

United would have to pay £52million to get their man. Onana, 22, could be available next summer.

Elsewhere, reports from Football Transfers reckon De Jong does not want to depart Barcelona next summer, amid one or two suggestions the Dutchman could finally leave. Barcelona have been tipped to cash-in on the playmaker amid long-standing interest from United, who failed to secure his signature last summer.

The 26-year-old was nurtured by Ten Hag at Ajax and was a key player in their famous run to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019. De Jong, though, is said to want to stay put at the Camp Nou after joining them in 2019.

United spent £180million-plus on Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund combined this summer. It was a quiet January transfer window for the club, though, with a strong emphasis on sanctioning loan exits.
