If Xabi Alonso declines the Liverpool job, the 44-year-old is one of the ‘primary favourites’

According to tbrfootball, Xabi Alonso is Liverpool’s top priority to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer, but if he is not available, the club may turn to Roberto De Zerbi. The Reds are looking for a new manager after Klopp indicated last month that he will step down at the conclusion of the season. Everyone is thinking about Alonso, but De Zerbi may be next.

The Spaniard is performing admirably at Bayer Leverkusen, where he leads the Bundesliga by eight points. He is one of the best young managers in the world right now. Liverpool would adore Alonso, but rumours this week suggest that Bayern Munich wants the 42-year-old to succeed Thomas Tuchel at the conclusion of the season.

If Alonso does not accept the Liverpool job, the Reds will have to go elsewhere, and writer Dean Jones believes Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is one of the favourites to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

He told GiveMeSport, “Yeah, that’s fascinating. At this point, I believe Liverpool will be disappointed if they do not sign Xabi Alonso. However, there are certainly more qualified people out there.

“When you look at the model and the sort of manager that they would choose, Roberto De Zerbi appears to fit a lot of the criteria. I believe that for the fan base, he would be a manager that would provide the majority of the fan base material that they were attempting to continue in a specific vein, and he would have a plan and philosophy that they could follow, as well as a personality that they could rally around.

“So I think that Roberto De Zerbi would be one of the prime favourites to take this job if Alonso does end up going elsewhere.”
